Quote #1:
"At one point, Enrique glances into a store window and sees his reflection. It is the first time he has looked at his face since he was beaten. He recoils from what he sees. Scars and bruises. Black and blue. One eyelid droops.
It stops him.
They really screwed me up, he mutters."

WHO SPEAKS: the Narrator and Enrique.
PAGE: 100 - 3rd paragraph

Significance:
It answers what has happened to him throughout his journey so question 2, What was the journey like coming to America? He finally sees what he looks like and then this is another quote he sees, " a battered young man, scrawny and disfigured." I think he knew that he looked diffrent its just he didn't think the scars and stuff were still there. I mean its been a while and they're still not gone. By the way he explains he thinks he looks you can tell he's not happy. I bet he doesn't want to show up to his mom looking like that.

Narrator Judgement:
I think Sonia the author and narrator of the book should explain in detail more about how he looks when he gets caught by the migra or by a robber or bandit/gang memeber/etc. The Narrator should tell us what Enrique is thinking not only wheer he is every 5 seconds... I mean obviously he's going to still be in the same state because he's been caught like 8 times there. So just move on. It would make the story much more intresting and still be a journey but not from her point of view but his... Enriques Journey not Sonia Nazario's Narration of how Enrique traveled to get to America. [long title] I'd like to know more conversation throughout the book instead of the narrator saying she said, they said, then he said. No just show us the dialogue. Like a character to character conversation.

Question #1:
How do you think your parents would react if you showed up all beat up or hurt?

Quote #2:
"You are in American Territory, a Border Patrol agent shouts into a bullhorn. "Turn Back."

Thank you for returning to your country."

WHO SPEAKS: Border Patrol
PAGE: 136 CHAPTER: 5 On the Border

Significance:
I know I a going to find more things about how the border patrol treats the migrants through 0out the book but so far ... this is the part where he is closer to them and thats what they tell him. SO this answers a small part of how some border patrol treat them...from question number 7 which is How do americans treat the characters? Well now they were nice to Enrique but thats only because he was just staring and too close to the border... if he was actually trying to pass they wouldn't be so polite.

Character Judgement:
The Border Patrol was actually nice they didn't take out their guns and say it meanly or at least the narrator didn't explain in detail what their faces look like. If Enrique thinks of a plan to cross with out the Border Patrol noticing he'll make it alove but if he gets caught and has to run for it I think the Border Patrol will start shooting and bring back up. Because in PAGE: 139 in the middle theres another quote and it says," They watch with cameras and agents in white sport-utility vehicles who patrol back and forth along a dirt road on top of a steep embankment along the far side." That quote was the narrator explaining what Enrique was thinking about the U.S Immigration Authorities.

Question:
Do you think Enrique will get caught by the Border Patrol and be deported after his long journey?

  1. Quote #1:
This quote is very good !
I was thinking of choosing this because it thoughtfully reflects how his journey is being like.It would be a surprise for myself to look at myself and too almost not recognize myself. Good job responding. I agree with your Narrator Judgment, its a lot of facts & narration but not a lot of Enrique's Journey.

    Response #1:
They would be very surprise. I have never been a trouble maker, so they would wonder how I got beat up. But they would take care of my injuries and find a way to help me.

    Quote #2:
I like your second quote, I never would have thought it will work. But you made it work. It is short but it actually explains how border patrol will treat immigrants. You explain what Enrique is thinking.

    Response #2:
I don't think so. He has gotten very far, hes so close to the U.S. Maybe if he doesn't watch his actions then it might be a yes. But I think that he will finally will she his mother. He explains how he has forgotten her. But no, I don't think he will get caught.
