Chapters 1-3
Perspective of Scout:
["Teach me?" I remember saying in surprise."He hasn't taught me anything, Miss Caroline. Atticus ain't got time to teach me anything, I added," Miss Caroline shook her head and smiled. Myy first day and I was already starting off on the wrong foot...I dn't do anything but say the truth. I can read and write, I explain to her the Cunninghams tribe, and I get hit with a ruler. Miss din't know about little chuck little either, but I wasn't gonna tell her and be punished more. Only bright thing 'bout this week's bin meeting Dill, and Jem touchin' Boos house. Dill is an eccentric boy, that what I liked about him. I was miserable when he left us in September to return to Meridian. The worst that came to me was I would start school in a week. Atticus condescended Jem to take me to school. Jem did so, but said I was in first grade and I couldn't hang out with him. Only reason he did it in the first place was 'cuz I think Atticuz gave him money.
If it weren't for the compromise I made with Atticus, I'd be little chuck, only goin' to school for a day. With that damn lady aroundits gonna make things at school hard. I ain't gonna go to Jem he's in the fifth grade. Oh stars I wish didn't have to go'ta school. Life in Maycombs gonna be different. The Cunningham's eatin' at our place? I wa'nt being rude...Jem was for invitin' him in the first place. I don't like that boy, or little chuck either. The lord is sending me more than I can bear. I hope Maycomb doesn't turn into a malevolent town, with Miss Caroline, Little chuck, BOO, the Cunningham and Calpurina [sometimes]. Calpurina although made me crackling bread and was nice to me. I don't know what made her do that but I'm pretty thankful. Maybe she heard my conversation with Atticus about my bad day in school.
Whatever the reason, I'm glad I had crackling bread. I just don't want today to finish, tommorow I've got to go to school again... something I'm not looking forward to. I don't want to see Walter or Miss Caroline. I also don't want to learn about cows... I want to learn about the news, Bills be Enacted into Laws, the diaries of Lorenzo Dow, anything that Atticus reads. And as for writing, let's let Calpurina be the judge of that. If she wants me to write, I'll write. No use in rebelling with her, with a women whose hand is as wide as a bed slat and twice as hard... rebelling is trouble. If she ever gave me any type of intimidation, she's the kind I wouldn't mess with, Jem n' I know better than that. Also I'd believe whatever threat she told me... she is woman who keeps her word. Well I better be off to bed, don't want Calpurina catching me in the middle of night writing in this journal.
